GSM tells you how heavy the paper is in your corrugated board. Combined with ply and flute, it drives crush resistance — so buy GSM for the job, not as a vanity number.
GSM in plain language
A corrugated carton is layers of kraft or duplex paper glued around a fluted medium. Each layer has a GSM. Vendors may quote overall board feel (“strong kraft”) or list liner GSM — ask which papers make up the board you are buying.
How GSM interacts with ply
- 3-ply + moderate GSM often covers light apparel and soft goods
- 5-ply + higher GSM suits heavier SKUs, stacking, and longer transit
- Low GSM on a 5-ply board can still fail if liners are weak
- High GSM on an oversized light SKU wastes money and cube
